Top-quality Gooseberry Easycrisp ‘Madame Sanssouci’ produces sweet juicy red fruits with an intense gooseberry flavour, easy to harvest from almost thornless plants. The plants are quick-growing and strong with shiny, leathery leaves, and have good mildew resistance.

‘Madame Sanssouci’ is a medium to late-harvesting gooseberry. The berries can be sour if picked too early, so let them ripen fully before harvesting to allow the sweetness to develop.

Planting tips and hints:

Planting in the ground: Dig a hole approximately twice as deep and 3 times as wide as the plant’s rootball. If your soil is heavy mix in a soil improver before backfilling. Place the plant in the hole so that it sits at the same level in the ground as it did in the pot. Firm the soil around the plant and water thoroughly. Water regularly in the first year after planting and in dry periods.

Planting in containers: Choose a pot with good drainage holes. Place stones or crocks (bits of broken pottery) at the bottom of the pot to stop the drainage holes clogging up. Use a good quality loam-based compost such as John Innes no 3.

Feeding and aftercare: Apply a slow-release high potash fertiliser in late winter. Feed container grown plants with a high potash liquid fertiliser during the summer months, and water regularly. Re-pot every 2-3 years in winter.
