Sowing Outdoors
Sow thinly, 1.5cm deep, direct in harvest position. If planting in rows, space the rows 40cm apart. Keep the soil moist at all times.
Thinning
When seedlings are large enough to handle, thin to 15cm apart if growing on to mature plants. For baby leaves, thinning may not be needed.
Advice
Do not sow in cold or hot conditions. Protect with fleece or cloches if necessary in early spring and in winter. Spinach is a thirsty crop - continue to water well, especially in warm, dry spells. Use thinnings in baby leaf salads. Pick leaves regularly to ensure continuous supply. Use young leaves in salads or allow to mature and then steam.
